Everything we need to know about wifi technology

everything we need to know about wifi

How Does WiFi Work at home? I think most of the time you hear the name wi-fi.  And also, you see the word  “Wi-Fi” or Wi-Fi sign everywhere. In schools, universities, shops and etc. But you don’t have an idea about wifi technology.

Wi-fi is a wireless communication technology. Wi-fi allows the devices such as laptops, mobile phones, computers to connect with the internet. Some people might introduce that wi-fi is just an another term for the internet, but that is not true. Wi-Fi is high speed internet and network connection and this technology uses radio waves to provide service.

And also, people say that Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. However, this is not the case. Wi-Fi is simply a brand name that means IEEE 802.11x.

There is a lot to know about Wi-Fi. Now i am going to tell you Everything we need to know about wifi technology

Why do we use Wi-Fi and why do we need Wi-Fi ?

This is a simple question and it has a simple answer. We use Wi-Fi for share a single internet connectivity rather than use separate connections for various devices.

For an example, think, if you have 5 members in your family and all of them use internet. So they have to use separate internet connections for all of them. But it is not easy because, they have to pay for 5 connections and 5 data packages. If one package has 30 Gb then you all have to pay for 150GB. If you  use Wi-Fi  instead of the expensive option as buying 30 Gb data for each device. You can go for one 30Gb data package and then share it through a WIFI network.

Why you should use WIFI?

Because you can connect your all devices to one network.

What is the history of WIFI technology and who invented WIFI technology?

The history of WIFI technology is interesting. Vic Hayes is regarded as the ‘farther of wifi”. Wifi was invented and first released for customers in 1997. And it’s created with the 802.11 standard and it has 2Mbps link speeds.

In 1998, MobileStar (a wireless internet service provider)becomes the first company to provide WIFI hotspots in hotels, airports, coffee shops by signing contracts with American airlines, Hilton hotels, and starbucks.

In 1999, There was a nonprofit trade association called WIFI ALLIANCE. They hold the WIFI trademark and certify products for interoperability. And also, apple introduced a WIFI slot option in its new iBooks under the name “airpot”. The iBook was the first computer to have WIFI capability.

In 2003, They introduced 802.11g standards. And WIFI gets more stronger than the later versions. Faster and further coverage than ever before.

In 2015, It is estimated that there are nearly 70 million WIFI hotspots worldwide.

How Does WiFi Work?

We all know that WIFI is transmitting data by using radio waves.

Your WIFI supported laptop, tablet, phone and etc. uses a wireless adapter to translate data into a radio signal and transmit that signal using antennas. These radio waves emanate outwards from the antenna and received by your wireless router. Then this wireless router converts the radio waves back into data and sends that data to the internet using a physical connection. To get data from internet to your device, just reverse the process.

Advantages of using WIFI technology

Convenience – you can access to network from nearly anywhere within their primary networking environment. WIFI connects computers, security devices, mobile phones, tablets and many other devices across work place. If your company has WIFI then, you only need WIFI password of you your company router to access to WIFI.

Mobility –  with the emergence of wireless network, users have the ability to access the internet even outside from their normal work  environment. For an example, most of shops offer WIFI facility to their customers with a little cost or free. Most of them offer free WIFI.

Productivity – if you work in a company, you can focus on assigned task regardless of location. User maintain a wide range of speed as they move from place to place. With WIFI, Employees can potentially be more productive.

Deployment – if you use a wired network, then you have to use more physical cables. It is additional cost and sometimes,  it is hard to reach some locations. If you use wireless network, then it only need a single access point or little more.

Expandability – wireless networks can serve for more clients with existing equipment. It does not matter if increased number of clients.  But in a wired network, additional clients would require additional wiring.

Cost – the cost of implementing  a wireless network is relatively inexpensive rather than wired networks. Because of wires, cables, switches, and other hardwares are relatively cost expensively. But in wireless networks we don’t need that much things to build a network.

Disadvantages of WIFI technology

Security – wireless networks are less secure than wired networks. Unauthorized users can access to your network and steal your data. And it is possible for remote intruders to gain access to network through backdoors like back orifice.

Range – there is a coverage area for network. To obtain more range you should use additional access points or WIFI extenders. Costs for these items can add up quickly.

Reliability –wireless networking signals are subject to a wide variety of interference, as well as complex propagation effects that are beyond the control of the network administrators.

Speed – speed of most wireless networks are 1-54 Mbps. Wireless networks are slower than wired networks when transferring files over a local area network. The problem becomes worst if you have a busy network or poor signal strength.
